Harry Potter books and movies are extremely popular with both boys and girls. It's no surprise then that when Halloween rolls around, one of the most popular costumes are outfits based on characters from the Harry Potter mythology. A Quidditch costume, worn while playing a broomstick-riding sport in many of the books and movies, can be quite easily crafted at home, without shelling out money to purchase a pricey costume from a store.

  1. 1

Find an old maroon or crimson coloured robe, preferably one with a hood. This will replicate the uniform used in the Harry Potter movies best and makes up the main part of the Quidditch costume. If you cannot find a suitable robe, a maroon or crimson coloured jersey will work as well.

  2. 2

Cut lengths of yellow ribbon to create two parallel lines running down both sides of the robe or jersey. Sew the ribbon onto the robe or jersey using a sewing machine and yellow or maroon thread. You may also create extra designs with the ribbon by sewing it around the bottom or collar of the jersey or robe.

  3. 3

Search the Internet for the "Gryffindor logo," a team emblem worn over the left breast of a robe or jersey. Print the logo out on dark iron-on transfer paper and wait for the ink to dry. When ready, iron the logo onto the costume, ensuring that the fabric is flat and straight so you don't create any wrinkles.

  4. 4

Add accessories to the costume to create a more well-rounded character. Aviator goggles make an excellent addition; however, swimming goggles can work in a pinch as well. Leather-like boots and gloves add to a Quidditch player's authenticity as well.

  5. 5

Construct a wizard's wand out of small stick you find in your backyard or park. Feel free to smooth out the wand with a knife to make it look more realistic. As well, an old broom lying around the house makes an excellent riding broomstick. The older and more beat-up, the better.

Tips and warnings

  • Watch Quidditch scenes from the Harry Potter movies to get a better idea of what the costume looks like, and add to your outfit using the likeness.
