How to Make a Convict Costume
Prison uniform with stripes (convict image by Earl Robbins from

Horizontal-striped prison uniforms were commonly used the in the 19th and early 20th century. The distinctive attire made it difficult for an escaped inmate to avoid recognition and recapture in cases of escape. Later, when rehabilitation became more the goal than punishment, the uniform was abolished. Although orange scrubs or denim shirts and jeans are more common now, the stripes may be making a comeback. It is still the look most associate with the word "convict."
