When you want to make your own Halloween or costume party outfit, but don't want to create something complicated or expensive, a granny costume is a perfect idea. You can make the costume with things you either already own or can purchase at a second-hand shop. While a granny costume works for someone of any age, it is an especially comical choice for a small child.

  1. 1

Wear a dress that looks like something a grandmother might wear. Choose a long dress with long or short sleeves, in a floral print and with lace edging, for example. Pair the dress with a baggy cardigan.

  2. 2

Pad yourself under the dress so that your figure looks a bit more grandmotherly. One way is to wear a large bra and a pair of shorts under the dress and pad them with small pillows.

  3. 3

Add knee-high stockings and a pair of solid black or white tennis shoes to your outfit to complete the clothing part of your costume.

  4. 4

Spray your hair with temporary grey hair colour and pull it back into a bun if you have long hair. If your hair is shorter, roll it into tight curls so that it looks like you have a perm.

  5. 5

Use make-up to make your face look more like a grandmother. Wear a thick layer of foundation and draw on wrinkles using eyeliner. Don't wear too much eye make-up, like mascara, because that will make you look too young.

  6. 6

Put on accessories to complete your granny costume. Wear a pair of thick bifocal glasses and stuff tissues into your pocket, the sleeve of your cardigan or the top of your dress. Carry a cane or use a walker if you want to go all-out.
