Rock candy is a simple-to-make treat that is a fun project for your and your children. Your kids enjoy eating the finished project and can also learn how molecules change shape when mixed with other substances. Making rock candy swizzle sticks requires only a few materials and some time.
Pour 2 cups of water into a saucepan and heat the water on the stove until it boils.
Add four cups of sugar slowly into the water and stir the mixture with a spoon until all of the sugar is dissolved. Be sure to stir constantly so that the sugar does not accumulate on the bottom of the pan and burn. When sugar no longer dissolves remove the saucepan from the burner and allow it to cool for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Pour the mixture into a tall jar until the jar is full.
Dip your swizzle sticks into the jar, coating them with the sugar and water mixture. Remove the swizzle sticks from the jar and lay them on waxed paper. Let the mixture on the swizzle sticks completely dry. This may take one to two days. As the mixture is drying, cover the jar with waxed paper.
Add food colouring and/or candy flavouring to the water and sugar mixture in the jar and stir with a spoon.
Insert the dried swizzle sticks into the jar. Do this by tying a string to the end of each swizzle stick. Tie the other end of the string to a pencil and lay the pencil across the jar, allowing the swizzle sticks to dangle into the jar. Cover the jar with waxed paper. Allow the swizzle sticks to remain in the jar for seven days while the sugar crystals form on the sticks.
Remove the rock candy swizzle sticks from the jar. The swizzle sticks may be stuck together, so use a knife to chip at the rock candy to separate them.
Be sure to set your jar in a place where it will not be disturbed while the rock candy is forming on the swizzle sticks.
