Miniature crowns and tiaras make a charming addition to dolls' wardrobes. You can create a variety of different styles using simple materials and techniques. By varying the colours and materials just a little, you can create everything from a beauty queen's diamond tiara to a fairy princess' floral crown. Making these tiny accessories can be a fun project for children, especially if you supply familiar and inexpensive materials such as coloured pipe cleaner and plastic beads. Transparent beads can be very effective in these little crowns, as they can stand in for jewels. Blue beads become sapphires and red beads become rubies.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Metallic pipe cleaners
- Green pipe cleaners
- Silver beading wire
- Green beading wire
- Fine pale green ribbons
- Transparent coloured beads
- Pearl beads
- Silver beads
Bend a metallic pipe cleaner around the doll's head to ensure that you have the right length and cut it.
Slip three transparent plastic beads in bright colours onto the pipe cleaner, with the larger of the beads in the middle.
Twist one end of another pipe-cleaner around the first, close to the first bead. Make three triangular points over each bead, twisting the second length of pipe-cleaner around the first in between each bead.
Make a headband from silver coloured craft wire or wide-gauge beading wire. Bend it around the doll's head to ensure a proper fit. Slip three pink pearl beads onto the headband.
Take another length of silver beading wire and wind one end around the headband until you get to the first pink pearl.
Thread five or six silver seed-beads onto the wire and make a little arch over the pink pearl. Secure the end of the arch with a twist. Repeat for the other pearls.
Make a headband from a length of green pipe-cleaner. Measure the length using the doll's head. Thread with several small, coloured beads.
Wind a length of pale green ribbon around the pipe cleaner. Tie in place with a loose knot at each end.
Wrap one end of a length of green beading wire around the pipe cleaner and over the ribbon. Thread a green bead onto the wire.
Wind the green wire along the rest of the headband, securing the ribbon and adding green beads at random. Create the effect of a vine wrapping around a garland of flowers.
Tips and warnings
- Make a child-sized version of a miniature tiara so your child can dress up just like her doll. Use an ordinary child's hairband and decorate this with coloured wire and beads.
- By extending the pipe cleaner a little, you can make a crown which doubles as a child's bracelet.
- Take care when threading small beads, as they can snap if the item you thread them on is too big for the hole.
