Copier technicians provide valuable services to businesses everywhere. Timely repair and routine maintenance of photocopiers helps keep normal business operations running smoothly. Copiers come in a variety of models, ranging from simple machines to most complicated pieces of office equipment. Receiving proper training on how to troubleshoot and repair the full spectrum of copiers is essential to the success of any copier technician's career. This places a great deal of responsibility on the instructor to train the technician properly.

Instructions

  1. 1

Verify each technician's background to make sure they have the proper educational prerequisites to work as a copier technician. Technicians should have a technical certificate from a vocational school or community college, certifying that they have passed a copier technician course.

  2. 2

Teach the technician about the specific copiers he will be working with. Use models of the copier brands your company uses. Open these copiers and teach the technician what the different parts are and how they react with each other. Allow the technician to remove and replace components that need to be changed as part of common repairs.

  3. 3

Use an experienced technician to continue a graduated training course for the copier technician. Partnering new technicians with experienced staff members allows the training to continue in a real world, hands on manner. Start new technicians with an assistant role, with experienced technicians explaining how and why the repair is being made. As training continues and confidence grows, allow the technicians to begin making more of the repairs themselves, until they are able to work independently.

  4. 4

Sponsor the copier technician to attend brand certification courses. Major brands of photocopier manufacturers offer certification programs that verify that a technician has received special training for servicing that particular brand of copier. Sending technicians to these certification programs provides more extensive training and adds to the credibility of your company.

Tips and warnings

  • Retrain staff whenever a new copier is added to the product line. This also creates a good opportunity to give all copier technicians a refresher course on items that they may not encounter routinely.
