Plastic flower pots can be hung in plant hangers from house eaves, patio overhangs, other exterior locations and from interior ceiling joists. Plant hangers are available at discount, garden, home decor and home improvement stores; and are available in a variety of materials such as macrame, braided fibres, wire or plastic. Plastic flower pots should be hung from a hook installed in a ceiling joist or exterior joist to protect your walls and ceilings from damage.

  1. 1

Place a ladder or step stool beneath the location you wish to hang the plastic flower pot.

  2. 2

Locate the ceiling joists with a stud finder. Stud finders are available at home improvement, discount and hardware stores. According to "Popular Mechanics" magazine's online article "7 New Stud Finders Let You See Through Walls," a stud finder contains a sensor that works by sliding the appliance over a wall, ceiling or floor. The stud finder sends out an electric field that is altered when it encounters the dense material of the wood stud or joist. Typically, the stud finder will beep and/or light up when a stud or joist is detected.

  3. 3

Draw a mark with a pencil onto the ceiling, overhang or wherever you've chosen to hang your plastic flower pot, where the stud finder has indicated the presence of a joist or stud.

  4. 4

Position the plant hook with the screw threads hovering over the mark drawn onto the ceiling or other location where you located the stud with the stud finder.

  5. 5

Use a hammer to gently tap the screw threads into the ceiling and into the joist until you feel the screw "bite".

  6. 6

Screw the plant hook into the ceiling until the base of the hook or end of the vinyl-coating or decorative design meets the plaster, wood or other surface covering the ceiling, overhang of other location where you are hanging the plastic flower pot. Screw the hook until it refuses to screw any further. Step off the ladder or step stool.

  7. 7

Install the plastic flower pot into the plant hanger of your choice. Interior plant hangers require a saucer to be installed beneath the plastic flower pot. According to Guide to Houseplants website, saucers, dripping pans, and attached saucers are necessary to protect your flooring if you water indoor plants. The flower pot and saucer are installed as a unit into the plant hanger. Most plant hangers have three or four hanging loops or ropes connected to a central hook, loop, or ring at the top. There is an expandable or fixed system of loops, weaving or a basket type arrangement that cradles the bottom of the pot or saucer and pot.

  8. 8

Step onto the ladder or step stool again. Hang the loop, hoop, hook or other fastener at the top of the plant hanger over the plant hook installed in the ceiling or other location. Hold the flower pot and carefully release your grip from the plant hanger. Keep your hands beneath the plant hanger and pot to test the strength of the hanger. When you're satisfied that the hook and hanger will hold the pot, step from the step stool or ladder.
