How to Create Your Own Browser Based RPG for Free

Updated July 20, 2017

Creating a browser based RPG (Role-Playing Game) is a long process. But it can be simple if you take necessary precautions before attempting to make a game. If you have no knowledge of PHP (hypertext preprocessor) or any other Internet scripting languages, it may be more difficult to pursue this task. But with a little effort, almost anyone will be able to create her own browser based RPG for use on her personal website.

Find and download a browser based RPG script that suits your needs. Depending on the type of game you want to create, you will need to look at several different scripts to find one that works for you. Many scripts can be located in the "Resources" section below, but you may need to look at all of them to find the right one.

Get a domain to host the script on. If you don't already have a domain, you will want to find some free hosting. You will find many free hosts in the "Resources" section below.

Install the script. Every script is different so you will need to read the instructions or "Read Me" file to install the script properly. Many of these scripts have install wizards that will take you through the process of creating your RPG but others require you to do things a little more manually.

Customise your RPG. Every script has the ability to add graphics, change names and do many different things. Most scripts come with preset data to give you a feel for browser based RPG creation so you will need to play around with the tools in order to create your perfect RPG. There are many similar RPGs out there so a good idea would be to do something that no others have done before. There are many Mafia and medieval style RPGs but how many out there are based on a unique alien world with places and creatures that have never been heard of? It's up to you to decide how to create your RPG.

Make your browser based RPG live. Follow the script's instructions to make your RPG live for others to play. If nobody is playing your RPG you may want to create a forum for people to discuss the game or perhaps ask people what they think would be good to add to the game to make it more fun. There's also the potential of creating a cash shop for players to spend their money on unique items not available to non-paying players.
