Microsoft Word 2007 contains an array of informational tools that provide statistics about any document you are working on, including the creation date and any changes made within the document. The word processing package even includes a word count feature that automatically keeps track of each word present within the document. Word 2007 is also capable of counting any words within footnotes, endnotes and text boxes as well. Word 2007's word count value is accessible and viewable through the program's main menu and main dialogue box.

    Open Microsoft Word 2007 by clicking "Start," selecting "All Programs" and choosing "Microsoft Word."

    Click "File" and "Open."

    Navigate to and double-click the document's file name you want to open to view its word count.

    Look at the status bar at the bottom of Word 2007's dialogue box, and locate the wording "Words:." The value next to "Words:" is the document's word count.

    Highlight a block of text, a sentence or page with your cursor or by clicking "Edit" and "Select All."

    To highlight text in another section of text not close to the first section, press and hold the "CTRL" key on your computer's keyboard, then highlight the second block of text.

    Look at the value next to "Words:" at the bottom of Word 2007's dialogue box. The value next to "Words:" is the word count for the highlighted text.

    Click anywhere within the document to unhighlight the text.

    Click the "Review" tab on Word 2007's main toolbar.

    Click "Proofing."

    Click "Word Count." The "Word Count" dialogue box will open.

    Click the check box next to "Include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes" to enable these words within the application's word count value.

    The updated word count value will appear next to "Words" on the "Word Count" dialogue box as well as on the status bar next to "Words:."

    Click "Close."

Tips and warnings

  • The "Word Count" dialogue box also includes the number of paragraphs, lines, pages and characters present in a document.
