How to replace bulbs in the Chevy Cobalt

Replacing any bulb on a Chevy Cobalt is straightforward. A few precautionary measures to take beforehand are parking the vehicle, turning off the engine and allowing the lights to cool before replacing them. You can purchase any of the bulbs you need for your Cobalt from a Chevrolet dealership or any auto-parts store. These instructions apply specificlly to the 2009 Chevy Cobalt, but changing the bulb on other model years of the car will be similar.

    Open the bonnet of the Cobalt and remove the two bolts securing the headlamp assembly into place.

    Remove the two plastic fasteners from the fascia and pull back the front fascia.

    Pull the headlight assembly at an angle and remove it. Disconnect the bulb base from the wiring harness by lifting the tab on the harness. Remove the wiring harness from the bulb socket.

    Remove the bulb retainer by turning it counterclockwise and pull the old bulb out. Install the new bulb and reattach the wiring harness to the bulb socket. Reconnect the bulb base to the harness and push the headlight assembly back into the Cobalt.

    Reattach the plastic fasteners and install the two bolts to secure the assembly into place. Close the bonnet.

    Open the boot and press the tabs under the boot lid to release the bulb assembly.

    Pull the assembly down to access the bulbs. Pull the old bulb straight out.

    Install the new bulb by pushing it into the assembly until it clicks. Align the tabs of the assembly with the boot lid and snap the assembly into place. Close the boot.

    Open the boot. Remove the boot trim and pull the tail light fastener back.

    Disconnect the wiring harness by unlocking the lock tabs and pulling it straight out.

    Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the assembly. Install the new bulb by pushing it into the assembly until it clicks.

    Reattach the wiring harness and place the fastener and boot trim back into their original positions. Close the boot.
