Few things are more annoying than loading a Web page and having your laptop suddenly blast loud music or sound effects. Dell laptops often have multimedia keys or buttons which can be used to turn the volume down so that sounds play at a more acceptable level. You can easily use these buttons to adjust the volume on your Dell laptop or, alternately, you can turn down the volume using the built-in sound mixer utility in Windows.
Click the speaker-shaped icon in the lower-right corner of your desktop. Windows displays the master volume control in a small pop-up window.
Click and hold the volume slider and drag it down to decrease the audio volume on your system. Release the mouse button when the sound level is acceptable.
Click the speaker-shaped icon at the bottom of the volume slider in Windows 7 and Windows Vista to mute the volume completely. In Windows XP, click the "Mute" check box.
Look for a row of buttons along the top or bottom of your keyboard. If your Dell laptop has dedicated volume buttons, you will see a button with an icon of a speaker and a curved line and another button with several curved lines for controlling the volume. Push the first button to lower the volume. If your Dell laptop does not have dedicated volume buttons, skip to the next step.
Look for a pair of keys on the keyboard with speaker-shaped icons as described in the previous step. Commonly, the volume hot keys on Dell laptops are the "PgUp" and "PgDn" keys.
Press and hold the "Fn" key and then tap the "PgDn" key -- or the key with the speaker-shaped icon -- until the volume is reduced to a suitable level.
When using the Windows Mixer to adjust the sound volume of your computer, you can double-click the speaker-shaped icon in the lower right corner to open the full mixer control. This gives you the ability to individually lower or raise the volume for different applications running on your Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer. In Windows XP, double-clicking the mixer icon allows you to adjust the volume for separate audio devices but does not allow you to adjust individual applications.
