Thrill the kids by making pictures on their toast. Imagine their surprise when you serve platefuls of eggs and toast, and the toast has imaginative pictures toasted into the surface of the bread. When you create pictures on cardboard and then brown the toast with the cardboard picture, the picture will toast into the bread and the bread will emerge with the picture. Make the cardboard picture intricate or simple; the result is sure to bring surprised reactions.

  1. 1

Cut the cardboard into a rounded square, roughly the size of the slice of bread.

  2. 2

Decide what picture you will create on the cardboard. Try a smiley face, a tree, a flower, a cartoon character, a fruit or vegetable, a car or a heart.

  3. 3

Sketch your picture onto the cardboard. Keep the sketch simple if you desire, or make it more complicated.

  4. 4

Cut out your sketch with the utility knife. Any areas of your sketch that you cut away will show on the slice of bread after you toast it. For example, for a picture of a flower, if you cut out the stem, leaves and petals of the flower but leave the background of the cardboard intact, the flower will appear on the bread after you toast it.

  5. 5

Place the cardboard over the toast, lining up the edges and the corners. Toast the bread with the cardboard on top of it.

  6. 6

Remove the toast from the toaster, and take the cardboard off the top of the toast. You should see the picture toasted into the bread where the cardboard was.

Tips and warnings

  • Either a standard toaster or a toaster oven will produce satisfactory pictures on toast.
