Hewlett-Packard laptops conserve energy by entering the "sleep" mode, but it is not completely powered down. The laptop flashes lights to alert the user that it is in sleep mode and this might be a distraction in a dark room. HP laptops have four power-saving states -- sleep, hibernate, hybrid sleep and away -- but only the hibernate mode completely turns the computer off. If you wish to eliminate flashing lights on the HP laptop, then hibernate the computer rather than putting it to sleep.
