How to Make Felted Wool Buttons

Needle felting can be used to transform wool roving into wool felt, which can be used in creating a variety of craft projects. For example, you can turn ordinary buttons into handmade needle felted buttons that can adorn a handmade sweater or vest. In order to felt buttons, it is necessary to needle felt the wool onto the button in a specific way. You can use these techniques to create as many felt buttons as your project requires.

Things you need

  • Wool roving
  • Button, knob type
  • Felting needle
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue stick
  1. 1

Insert a glue stick into the glue gun and plug it into an electrical outlet.

  2. 2

Allow the glue gun to heat up for at least five minutes.

  3. 3

Cover the top of a knob button with hot glue.

  4. 4

Press a wad of wool roving onto the hot glue. Allow the glue to cool and harden.

  5. 5

Poke a felting needle into the wool roving repeatedly to felt the wool. The felting needle contains tiny barbs on the tip, which tease the roving into felt. Continue needle felting the wool until the top of the button is tightly felted.
