People have built lighthouses since the Egyptians used them to guide ships away from the dangerous shores. Modern lighthouses are powerful enough to transmit their light over many miles. These modern lighthouses use electric lights instead of kerosene lamps. You can make a simple paper lighthouse model quickly.

Lay white paper on a flat surface with the long side horizontal. This will be the tower of the lighthouse. Draw a door, windows, and stripes and colour the tower as desired. Set the paper aside.

Trace a circle with a 5-inch diameter on a second piece of paper. Cut out the circle. Trace a second circle with a 3-inch diameter. Cut out the circle. Make a single cut from the side of the 3-inch circle to the centre. Cut a strip of paper 11 inches long and 3 inches wide. This strip will be the lamp portion of the lighthouse Color a flame or windows as desired.

Roll the large sheet of paper into a tube with a 3-inch diameter. Tape in place. Set it upright on a flat surface. Adjust as necessary so the tube is stable and can stand independently. Set the 5-inch circle centred on top of the tube. Glue in place. Roll the 3-inch strip of paper into a tube with a 2-inch diameter and tape to hold. Set the tube on top of the circle so it is centred over the larger tube. Glue in place. Grasp the ends of the smaller circle where the cut is. Gently pull together to create a cone with a 2-inch diameter. Tape to hold in place. Set the cone on top of the 2-inch tube and glue in place.

Allow the glue to dry and verify all parts are stable. Add glue or tape as necessary to hold everything in place. Set the paper model on a piece of styrofoam or cardboard for transport.
