The TomTom XL is a global positioning system (GPS) unit that can be used in a car as a navigation aid. There are a few different versions of the TomTom XL available, some of which have a Secure Digital (SD) card slot for importing extra maps. To add an SD card to your TomTom XL, you simply need to insert the card into the proper slot and access a hidden menu option.

Locate the SD card slot at the bottom of your TomTom XL.
Hold the TomTom XL with the screen facing up and the SD card slot facing toward you. Hold the SD card with the label side up and the arrow facing toward the TomTom XL. Insert the SD card into the slot until you hear a click.
Turn on your TomTom XL. Your SD card is now ready to use. To change a map, tap "Change Preferences" on the "Home" screen then tap "Show ALL Menu Options." Tap "Switch Map" to change to another map on your SD card.
