How to Unarchive a Zip File

Updated February 21, 2017

Zip files are compressed files or folders contained in a single .zip file. The act of compressing files is called archiving, and decompressing them is unarchiving. Zip files allow you to put many files or folders into one easy to handle .zip file. The file size is also reduced as part of the compression procedure.

Navigate to the compressed zip file.

Double-click the zip file.

Drag and drop individual files out of the zip folder and into another folder if you don't want to extract all of the zip file contents.

Click "Extract all files" to run the Extraction Wizard to unzip the entire folder. Click "Next." Click "Browse" and navigate to the location you want to extract the files to. Click "Next" then "Finish."
