How to Put in Codes for My RCA Universal Remote

Updated April 17, 2017

RCA universal remote controls can be used to remotely control your TV, DVD, VCR or other options through the AUX option. Sometimes these remotes will work automatically with your devices, but most of the time a code must be programmed into the remote in order for the device to work. These codes can be found in your remote control user manual or online.

Obtain the code for the device you wish to program. Turn on the device.

Press and hold the "Code Search" button on the remote control until the indicator light lights. Release the "Code Search" button.

Press and release the button associated with the device you wish to control ("TV," "VCR," "Cable" or "AUX," for example). If you are using the "AUX" button, press and release the "AUX" button, then press the device type you are programming. The indicator light will blink once, then remain lit. (If your remote does not have a "DVD" button, program your DVD player into the "VCR" button.)

Enter the code (usually a three-digit number) using the number pad. The indicator light will turn off.

Aim your remote toward the device you have programmed, then press the "On/Off" button. Your device should turn off.

Test the device you have programmed into the remote. Turn the device on, then press a button on the remote such as "Volume Up." If your device responds, no further programming is needed. If it does not respond, repeat the programming process with a different code.
