La-Z-Boy manufactures a complete line of recliners and rocker-recliners in many sizes, styles and fabrics. The retractable footrest on a La-Z-Boy recliner allows a homeowner to enjoy the benefits of relaxing with his feet elevated, without needing a separate ottoman that takes up additional space in the room. On some La-Z-boy recliner models, pulling a handle on the right side lifts the footrest. The chair's mechanism also allows users to select three different heights for the footrest. Over time, the recliner's handle may bind and break off, requiring replacement.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- Small flat screwdriver
- Allen wrench
- Screw driver with Torx bit (optional)
- Lubricating spray
- Rubber mallet
Tip the recliner forward so the arms rest on the floor. Make sure the footrest is in the closed position.
Look for a screw at the base of the control handle. If you see a screw, skip to Step 4. Continue to Step 3 if there is no visible screw.
Place a small flat screwdriver under one corner of the cover on the rounded part of the recliner handle. The cover is near the base of the handle, and may have the La-Z-Boy name on it. Pry the cover off the handle, pulling the cover straight out.
Loosen the setscrew that holds the handle to the chair; the screw is located at the base of the handle or under the handle's removable cover. Use an Allen wrench or screwdriver with Torx bit to turn the screw counterclockwise to loosen it. Pull the screw straight out.
Pull the handle straight outward to remove it from the bolt. If it doesn't come easily, place one hand on the handle under its base and your other hand on the long arm near the base. Rock the handle up and down, left and right, to loosen it while pulling outward. Spray lubricating spray on the bolt if it's still difficult to remove, being careful not to get the spray on the chair's fabric. Pull the handle straight off the bolt. Slide the trim plate, if there is one, off the bolt.
Place the new trim plate over the chair bolt. Place the new handle over the chair bolt, on top of the trim plate, with the long part of the handle pointing straight up.
Replace the setscrew at the base of the handle, or in the centre of the handle base. Tighten the setscrew by turning it clockwise with an Allen wrench or screwdriver with Torx bit. Skip to Step 9 if your chair doesn't have a screw cover.
Place the screw cover over the opening on the handle. Tap it inward with a rubber mallet so it is secure on all sides.
Tip the chair upright and test the handle for proper operation.
