Your Dell printer may not load paper or may load incorrectly and result in jams for a variety of reasons. The printer rollers might get stuck, a small piece of paper or other small item might be jamming it or it might be getting old and require replacement. Fixing the printer is simple in many cases and does not require professional repair unless parts need replacement or there is something that cannot be fixed at home.

Turn off and unplug the printer. Never try to repair a printer while it is plugged in because it can result in electrical shock.
Open the printer's access cover and look for any obstructions, such as paper clips, small items or even small pieces of paper that might be jamming the printer. Pull out any items that are seen in the printer.
Plug the printer in to an electrical socket and turn it on. Place some paper in the tray, and press the "Feed" button. Watch the rollers to determine whether the problem is related to the rollers. If it feeds properly, the problem was an item jamming the rollers. If it does not feed, either the rollers are not working or something is creating a problem elsewhere.
Turn off the printer and unplug it. Feed the cardboard, cardstock or similar material into the manual feed slot. Gently push it through the printer until it comes through the exit slot.
Move the cardboard or similar material gently up and down and then move it to the other side and again move it up and down. This will loosen anything that is jamming the printer and should fix problems with the rollers. Remove the cardboard or cardstock paper.
Plug in and turn on the printer. Press the "Feed" button again, and check that the paper is feeding into the printer properly.
