Importing contacts from your Microsoft Outlook account into your BlackBerry device requires the help of a Blackberry Desktop Manager. The Desktop Manager acts as a liaison that converts and separates the various fields so that they can be read by the BlackBerry device. When contacts transfer from or to Microsoft Outlook, the contacts save in a .CSV file, which stands for Comma-Separated Values. This type of file makes separation of database items easier to convert into a text format. A comma in the text format separates data in each database cell. This type of file is widely used because it makes it easier to convert data from Excel or database format to any other format.

Importing a .CSV file to a BlackBerry requires you to first export the file from an address book program such as Microsoft Outlook. To export contacts open Outlook, navigate to "File" and choose "Options". Select "Advanced," choose "Export" then select "Export to a file". Choose "Comma Separated Values" as the extension type and go to the next screen.
Select the "Contacts Folder" and choose "Next". Indicate the location you would like to save the .CSV file you just created by selecting "Browse". After selecting the location, a new box will populate requiring you to name the .CSV file, create a name and type it in the appropriate box. Click "OK," "Next" and "Finished" to finalise your new .CSV file.
Visit the designated website based on your wireless carrier. For example, if your wireless carrier is Sprint, your BlackBerry Internet Service website address would be www.Sprint.Blackberry.com . Your wireless carrier will provide your initial user name and password to you.
Once you sign in to the website, choose the 'Address Book' option, select 'Import' and click 'Browse'. Locate and select the .CSV file you originally exported and saved from Microsoft Outlook.
Once the file is selected, click 'OK' and choose 'Add'. The CSV file will automatically import to your BlackBerry. The file will automatically populate in the correct fields within your BlackBerry address book.
Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager on your computer and click on 'Synchronise'. From this pop-up menu, click on the 'Configuration' tab and select 'Configure Synch'. A new window will populate called 'Intellisync'. From this window, place a check-mark in the box next to 'Address Book' and select 'Setup' to enable synchronisation.
Once the 'Address Book Setup' window populates, select the application you would like to synchronise with the chosen address book. The choices available include Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo, Microsoft Outlook Express and ASCII Importer/Exporter. Most BlackBerry users favour the ASCII Importer/Exporter or Microsoft Outlook. Once you determine the application you would like to synchronise, select 'Next'.
Choose the appropriate synchronisation option. Since you are importing a .CSV file to your BlackBerry, you should choose 'One way sync to Device'. If you are using Microsoft Outlook, you must select the Outlook user profile the contacts are coming from on the following screen. Select 'Next', click 'Finish' and choose the 'Synchronize' tab. Ensure the 'Synchronize organiser data' is selected and finally click 'Synchronize Now' to complete the .CSV import.
