The ION audio company makes a USB turntable that can convert the audio from a vinyl record into a digital signal that can be recorded by a computer. The USB turntable must be connected to a computer, Mac or PC, in order to transfer the audio to the computer’s hard drive through an included audio program. The digital file can then be played on a portable device like an iPod or burnt to a CD for playing in a home theatre or car’s CD player. The ION USB turntable can also be connected to a home theatre for listening to vinyl records directly through your speakers.

Tips and warnings

  • ION makes a number of different turntables, some of which include docks for iPods or built-in burners so that no computer is needed in order to make a CD from a vinyl record.
  • The MP3 format will be the smallest file size and the most compatible with portable devices like iPods.
