How to use an ion USB turntable

Updated February 21, 2017

The ION audio company makes a USB turntable that can convert the audio from a vinyl record into a digital signal that can be recorded by a computer. The USB turntable must be connected to a computer, Mac or PC, in order to transfer the audio to the computer’s hard drive through an included audio program. The digital file can then be played on a portable device like an iPod or burnt to a CD for playing in a home theatre or car’s CD player. The ION USB turntable can also be connected to a home theatre for listening to vinyl records directly through your speakers.

Position the ION USB turntable next to the computer. Plug the USB cable attached to the ION USB turntable into a USB port on the computer.

Insert the ION installation disc into the side slot of a Mac or press the “Eject” button on the front of the PC, place the ION installation disc on the ejected tray and close the tray.

Double-click on the icon of the installation disc when it appears on the desktop. Double-click on the installation program that is inside of the window that appears on the desktop. Follow the menu commands to install the ION turntable program onto the computer’s hard drive. Restart the computer after the installation is complete.

Launch the ION turntable program by double-clicking its icon inside of the “Applications” folder if on a Mac or by selecting it from the “Start,” “All Applications” pop-up menu if on a PC.

Place the vinyl record onto the turntable with side one facing up. Turn on the ION turntable. Place the needle arm onto the edge of the vinyl record.

Press the “Record” button on the ION turntable program to start recording side one of the vinyl record. Press the “Pause” button when side one is finished.

Place the needle arm back onto the arm rest. Remove the vinyl record from the turntable. Turn over the vinyl record. Place the vinyl record with side two facing up on the turntable. Place the needle arm onto the edge of the vinyl record.

Press the “Pause” button on the ION turntable program again to start recording side two of the vinyl record. Press the “Stop” button when side two has finished playing. Turn off the ION USB turntable. Remove the vinyl record. Remove the ION USB turntable’s USB cable from the port on the computer.

Navigate to the “File” menu and select “Save As” from the top of the screen. Navigate in the window that appears to the desktop of the computer. Name the digital file that was made form the vinyl record in the “Name” column at the top of the window--use the same name as that of the vinyl record.

Select “MP3” or “AIFF” or “WAV” from the “Format type” drop-down menu near the bottom of the window. Press the “Save" button at the lower right corner of the window. Quit the ION turntable program once the digital file is saved to the desktop and the window disappears.

ION makes a number of different turntables, some of which include docks for iPods or built-in burners so that no computer is needed in order to make a CD from a vinyl record.

The MP3 format will be the smallest file size and the most compatible with portable devices like iPods.
