How to Make Adult Lion Costumes
(lion image by david purday from

Of all the big cats, the lion is considered the king. In size, it is second only to the tiger. The face of the lion, particularly the adult male with its majestic mane, is one of the most widely recognised animal symbols in human culture. A lion can be ferocious, cuddly or funny. It can be a child’s toy, a cartoon or a costume but we all know a lion when we see him.

  1. 1

Cut a strip of fake fur 4 feet long and 2 inches wide. Cut 2 inches from the end of the strip of fur.

  2. 2

Roll the 6-by-24-inch piece of yellow cloth into a tube and sew the top flap down. Sew the ends together. Wrap the 2-by-2 piece of fur around the end and sew it on. Sew to the back of the leotard for the costume's tail.

  3. 3

Remove the sleeves from the hoodie and cut it off just below the armpits. Hem the cut edges. Sew the fur strip around the edge of the hood.

  4. 4

Cut off the tips of each finger of the gloves and attach fake fingernails. Wear the gloves with nails protruding from fingers as the lion's claws.

  5. 5

Cut ears out of cardboard. Cut inner ears out of pink felt. Glue the felt to the cardboard.

  6. 6

Cut another pair of larger ears from the fake fur. Glue to the back of the cardboard, bringing excess to front, and glue to the outer edges. Sew the ears to the hood.

  7. 7

Paint the face with a black nose and black whiskers.
