The Brother HL laser printer, like other laser printers, uses heat and pressure rollers to fuse powdered ink to paper. The heat used by a laser printer may be too severe for thinner paper types. If you notice the paper you use with your printer stays curled after the paper cools off, change the printer’s settings to reduce the heat applied to the paper as it passes through the printer. If you switch paper later and notice the ink smudges easily, you can change the setting back to improve the ink’s fusion with the paper.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Click on the “Start” button in Windows XP and select “Control Panel.” Click on “Printers and Faxes” to display the printer icons.

  2. 2

Right-click on the Brother HL’s icon and click on “Properties.” Click on the tab labelled “Advanced.”

  3. 3

Click on the “Device Options” button on the top of the tab, labelled with a wrench icon. In the menu in the “Device Options” window, double-click on “Improve Print Output.”

  4. 4

Click on “OK” to close the advanced properties window. Click “OK” once more to close the properties window and save your settings.
