How to make a circus cannonball jumper costume

Updated April 17, 2017

A human cannonball jumper is an iconic image from classic circuses dating back generations. The bit, performed as a spectacle during a circus tour, involved a man stuffing himself into a large cannon and being fired out of the cannon, becoming airborne, as a cannonball would. This costume can be created through many items found in your own closet, or through a few small purchases at a local vintage store.

Assemble an all grey jumpsuit, or a grey pair of slacks or sweatpants and a long sleeved hooded and/or turtleneck shirt.

Tuck the shirt into the trousers and wrap a red belt around your waist.

Place a red bicycle helmet on your head and place a pair of goggles (red or black) over your eyes.

Paint a pair of kitchen or bathroom rubber gloves red. Allow to dry. The gloves should be long enough to cover half of your forearm.

Purchase a pair of red rain boots or paint a pair of rain boots red. Allow to dry.

Pull the rain boots over the bottoms of your trousers. Pull the gloves on and over the sleeves of the shirt.
