Most colleges do not require students to have laptops, but laptops make it easier for students to study, take notes and do research. Students with laptops also have the benefit of easily carrying them from place to place, unlike the students who have desktops and must stay in the area where their desktop is located. Laptops are useful tools, but getting one can be difficult if you do not have sufficient funds. Fortunately, there are resources that can help students get laptops for free.

Skill level:

  1. 1

You can ask your family for a laptop as a graduation present. Choose which laptop you would like and your family can pitch in money to buy it as your present. That way, instead of spending graduation money on frivolous things, you can actually get a laptop, which will be useful for school.

  2. 2

Check the classified ads and Craigslist for free laptops. Many people sometimes don't want to go through the hassle of selling it, or just have old laptops they no longer want. Many of these people are willing to give away their laptops. Before you agree to take it, be sure to check its condition closely. It may be free, but you want a laptop that works. Make sure it has everything you need.

  3. 3

Research free laptop giveaways. Many laptop companies, like HP, have laptop sweepstakes. Many of these giveaways require you to fill out online forms asking for information about themselves. This form is then put in a pool of other applicants' forms. It is sometimes recommended that participants fill out these forms every day for a higher chance of receiving a new laptop.

  4. 4

Apply for a grant. A grant is federal money that is given to help students afford college and does not need to be paid back. Although grant money is primarily used to cover tuition costs, it can also be used toward school supplies and expenses, such as books -- and laptops.
