Everyone has clutter of some kind. If you have a television in your room, odds are it has at least one remote, if not two or three for its additional electronic pals. Readers probably have a stack of books piled up on the nightstand, not to mention reading glasses, bedtime vitamins, lotion and magazines. Caddies designed for a bed can help organise this chaos, keeping everything within easy reach. Make one yourself to get on the right track to taming clutter.

  1. 1

Lay out the items you want to organise. Arrange them like puzzle pieces, figuring out how they all fit together. None should be more than about one-half inch apart, and the edges of the configuration must form a rectangle.

  2. 2

Measure the height and width of the "clutter puzzle." Double the height and add an inch to all of the measurements. For instance, if the "puzzle" is 10 inches wide and 8 inches high, you'll need a piece of canvas fabric 17 inches long and 11 inches wide.

  3. 3

Draw out the fabric rectangle with chalk and cut it out with scissors. Fold over one-half inch of all the fabric edges, pinning them as you go. Stitch this hem with the sewing machine, forming the backing for the caddie.

  4. 4

Place the "clutter puzzle" on the lower half of the fabric, or the bottom 8 inches in the example. Keep them in their original configuration so you know where all of the pockets will go.

  5. 5

Measure the height and width of each item, adding one inch to each measurement. Cut one rectangle for each item to form the pockets. Fold over one-half inch of one edge of each rectangle and stitch it down; this hem will become the top of the pocket.

  6. 6

Remove items in the "cluster puzzle" from the canvas backing one item at a time, pinning the corresponding pocket to the backing. Turn the edges of each pocket under so they lie inside.

  7. 7

Run a bead of Liquid Stitch around the edges of each pocket and press down firmly. Remove the pins from the inside of each pocket and apply a second bead of Liquid Stitch. Allow the liquid stitch to dry overnight.

  8. 8

Place the top half of the canvas backing between the mattress and box spring so the portion with the pockets hangs against the bed. Fill the caddie with the items.
