The check engine light on your Dodge Durango indicates a problem with the sensors, valves or solenoids on the vehicle that allow your truck to run properly. When your check engine light comes on, you need to use a scan tool to retrieve the codes from the Durango, then you can fix the vehicle and reset the computer. This will shut off the check engine light on your Dodge Durango.

Locate the OBD diagnostic port to the left of the fuse panel under the steering column. You should be able to access it without removing the fuse panel cover. However, if you have trouble accessing it, pull down on the fuse panel cover manually and pry the fuse panel cover off of the fuse panel.
Plug the OBD scan tool plug into the open access port for the OBD scan tool. This port is a rectangular access input that accepts a pinned connector on the OBD plug. Scan tools are available at most auto parts stores.
Turn the ignition to the "II" position on your Durango. Then turn on the OBD scan tool.
Wait for the display screen on the tool to read "OK, then press the "Clear" button on the scan tool to clear all engine codes. This will also cancel the check engine light. Unplug the OBD scan tool and replace the fuse panel cover if you've taken it off.
