Baby changing units are typically found in restaurants and rest stops, but they can also be used in the home. You can install a baby changing station in the bathroom for convenience when getting the baby ready for a bath, or anywhere in the home that a baby changing station would be convenient. When installing a baby station there must be enough clearance for it to fully open, and it must be secured to wall studs for safety.

Instructions

  1. 1

Determine the wall location in the room where the baby changing station will be installed. Choose an approximate height for the table and make a small pencil mark on the wall. The changing station should be installed at a height that is comfortable for you to take care of the baby when he is placed on the table.

  2. 2

Use the stud finder to locate the stud in the wall that is closest to the pencil mark that you made for the height and location of the changing table. Mark the stud location with the pencil.

  3. 3

Open the changing table and remove the screw cover caps located in each corner of the mounting plate. The mounting plate is the vertical portion of the changing table when it is open; it is the section that mounts to the wall. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the caps.

  4. 4

Ask a helper to hold the changing table so that the top right or top left screw hole is directly over the stud location pencil mark. Place the level on the top edge of the changing station. Adjust the changing station until it is perfectly level and then mark the three remaining screw holes with the pencil. Move the changing station away from the wall.

  5. 5

Check the two screw hole marks on the opposite side of the screw hole marks that you made on the stud location. Use the stud finder to see if you can locate a wall stud under those marks. If there isn't a stud, you will have to use toggle bolts to secure that end of the changing station to the wall. You must pre-drill holes in the wall with the correct size drill bit. The exact size of drill bit that you must use will be marked on the package of toggle bolts.

  6. 6

Slide a finishing washer and a flat washer over the end of a 3-inch screw. Ask the helper to hold the changing station so that the screw holes line up with the screw hole marks on the wall. Drive the screw through the top-left screw hole in the changing station and into the stud. Repeat this step for each remaining screw hole. Insert two toggle bolts in place of two screws if necessary, and tighten them with the drill.

Tips and warnings

  • Test the changing table with a combination of items that weigh a minimum of 27.2kg. by placing the objects equally spread out across the changing table.
  • A baby changing station must be securely anchored to the wall, or it will ultimately come loose.
  • Never leave a baby unattended on the changing table.
