Running shoes experience a lot of wear and tear. With maintenance, you can retain the appearance of running shoes and eliminate odour and bacterial growth on the inside of the shoes. The cleaning process can be completed with the use of a few common household products.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Cleaning cloths
- Baking soda
- Washing machine
- Laundry detergent
Read the cleaning instructions on the tag of the mesh running shoes. Most are machine washable.
Remove laces and place both the shoes and laces in the washing machine.
Set the machine to wash a small load in cold water.
Pour 2 tablespoons of laundry detergent, one-half cup of vinegar and one-fourth cup of baking soda into the washing machine. The detergent cleans, the baking soda deodorises and the vinegar disinfects.
When the machine stops, remove the shoes and laces. Allow both to air dry before reinserting laces.
Tips and warnings
- Quickly hand-clean your shoes by dusting them with baking soda and allowing the soda to work overnight. This collects moisture and removes odour. Disinfect by spraying the shoes with a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar. Wipe off mud with a damp cleaning rag.
