If you are a parent, it is likely that there are many websites that you do not want your children browsing to. Although it is possible to block access to a website in Windows, most ways of doing so can be circumvented by computer-savvy children. Blocking a website on a router, however, is difficult to get around without a proxy server -- and proxy servers can also be blocked. Block a website in your Netgear router if you have children or other computer users who you do not want to visit the site.

  2. 2

  3. 3

Click "Block Sites" on the left side of the window under the "Content Filtering" category.

  4. 4

Type the domain name of the website (e.g., "") that you want to prevent access to in the box at the top of the screen. Alternatively, type a single keyword to prevent access to any website containing that word.

  5. 5

    Click the "Add Keyword" button.

  6. 6

Place a check in the box labelled "Allow Trusted IP Address to Visit Blocked Sites" if you would like a computer on the network to retain the ability to browse the websites you have blocked, then use the boxes to the right to enter the IP address of the computer.

  7. 7

Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window to save your settings.

Tips and warnings

  • If you configure your Netgear router to allow a computer to access the websites you have blocked, make sure that the trusted computer is always given the same IP address. Click "LAN IP Setup" under the "Advanced" category to reserve an IP address for your computer.
