How to Reset the Parental Controls Pin for Wii

The Nintendo Wii allows parents to monitor what games their children are allowed to play by setting up a four-digit pin. The pin is chosen during the initial set-up of the Wii's parental control settings. The four-digit pin prevents children from playing games that are too mature for their age level. If you have forgotten or misplaced the pin, accessing and answering the previously supplied security question will grant you access. A reset with a five-digit Master Key must be performed if you have forgotten both the pin and security question.

  1. 1

Power on the Wii to access the "Channel" menu. Use the controller to place the cursor on the "Wii" button located on the left at the bottom of the screen. Press "A" on the controller to open the "Wii Settings" menu.

  2. 2

Move the cursor to the wrench, or "System Settings," and press "A" to open. Place the cursor on the blue arrow and press "A" to open the second page of settings options. Move the cursor to "Parental Controls" and choose "Yes."

  3. 3

Move the controller's cursor to the "I Forgot" option and press "A." Answer the security question that was chosen during the parental control set-up process.

  4. 4

Place the cursor on "I Forgot," under the security question, if you don't remember it. A confirmation code will display and will need to be written down. Access the Wii Parental Control Password Reset Tool (see Resources) or contact Nintendo Customer Service at 800-255-3700. After you provide the confirmation number, both options will give you a five-digit code, or "Master Key." Write down the Master Key.

  5. 5

Move the cursor on to "Enter Master Key" and press the "A" key to select. Enter the five-digit passcode received in Step 4. Place the controller's cursor on "Confirm Master Key" and press "A." The Wii's parental control features are now disabled. Press the "OK" key to return to the "System Settings" menu.

  6. 6

Move the cursor to "Parental Controls" once more and press "A." Enable your parental control settings by selecting a new four-digit pin and security question. Press "OK" to save the new settings.
