How to Make a Dragonfly Necklace
Make a dragonfly necklace with beads and beading wire. (dragonfly, image by david purday from

Dragonflies are featured on many pieces of jewellery because they are aesthetically pleasing but not as "girlie" as butterflies. There are many ways you could go about making a dragonfly necklace but one of the most simple and least expensive ways is by using beading wire and the beads of your choice. This is a versatile project because you can use any size or type of bead and make the dragonfly as big or as small as you want by adjusting the lengths of the wire used.

  1. 1

Measure with your ruler and cut three 6-inch pieces of 28 gauge beading wire with your wire cutters. Cut another piece at 1/2 inch.

  2. 2

String an even number of seed beads onto one of the 6-inch pieces of wire, as many as it takes to be left with an inch of wire free on each end. Form a circle with this strand by feeding one of the ends into the first bead on the opposite end. Twist the circle in the middle to form a figure-eight, and coil the two free ends of wire to secure it. Repeat this step to complete both sets of wings.

  3. 3

Fold the 1/2-inch piece of wire in half and leave the ends open at a 45-degree angle. Grip the ends of the 1/2-inch wire with round needle nose pliers, rotate them inward and stop before you make a complete turn. This will create the antennae for the dragonfly.

  4. 4

Fold the last piece of 6-inch wire in half. Put the "antennae" wire through the loop in the middle of the fold and give the folded wire one twist so it will stay in place. Feed three beads onto the wire for the body of the dragonfly (both ends of the folded wire are being beaded as if it was one piece).

  5. 5

Attach both sets of wings by feeding the wires for the body through the beads in the centres of the wings (where you twisted them to make a figure-eight). Slide them up against the first three beads and continue adding beads to the body of the dragonfly. When you have one inch of wire left at the end, add one more bead and loop the ends of the wire through the last and second-to-last beads three times to secure it.

  6. 6

Open a jump ring and put it on one of the wings of the dragonfly. Loop the jump ring through a necklace chain and close the jump ring. Your dragonfly necklace is now ready to wear.
