Asset tags were initially used by Dell and its corporate partners to track key components used in the manufacture and distribution of personal computers and laptops. Asset Tags are now often used to track computer modifications and updates. Dell provides an Asset Tag utility, allowing owners to change the Asset Tag in the Latitude D610. The utility can be downloaded from the Dell website. It is an MS-DOS utility, so your laptop must have a working floppy drive to successfully run this particular utility. If you replace a component in the Dell Latitude D610, it is advised that you contact both Dell and the component manufacturer for warranty and update purposes.

    Create a Bootable Floppy Diskette

  1. 1

Visit the Dell website referenced below and click on the "Technical Support" tab located in the upper right corner of the web page.

  2. 2

Type "Dell Portables Asset Tag" in the search field located in the upper right corner of the web page.

  3. 3

Click "Download Now" to download the file, making sure you save the file to your Desktop. When the download is complete a diskette icon will appear on your Desktop.

  4. 4

Double Click on the new diskette icon and the self extractor window will appear.

  5. 5

Click "Set Up" and a black MS-DOS window will appear with a message indicating that you will need one floppy diskette to continue.

  6. 6

Insert a blank floppy diskette in the floppy drive. Press the "Enter" key and a message will appear indicating that all data will be erased from the floppy diskette. Press the "y" key and press "Enter." The files will then be copied to the floppy diskette. You will be prompted to remove and insert another diskette if more than one floppy is required to complete the process.

    Running the Asset Tag Utility

  1. 1

Insert the floppy diskette in the floppy drive. If you are using more than one floppy diskette, insert the first floppy disk. Click the Microsoft icon in the lower left corner and Click "Restart".

  2. 2

Press the "F12" key immediately after the Dell Logo screen appears. This will open the boot options directory on your laptop. If the operating system logo appears, allow the Windows desktop to load and then restart the computer, starting the process again. When this operation is successful, you will be given a choice of booting locations and processes.

  3. 3

Press the arrow keys to select boot from the "Diskette Drive" and press the "Enter" key. The computer will boot from the floppy diskette, opening to an MS-DOS window.

  4. 4

Type "asset" and after pressing the space bar, type in the new asset tag. Press the "Enter" key. An asset tag can have up to 10 characters. Any combination of characters excluding spaces is valid for the creation of an Asset Tag.

Tips and warnings

  • An example of how to correctly enter an asset tag is below:
  • asset 12345&ABC;#
  • Many of the Dell Latitude D610 laptops shipped with a Systems Utility CD-ROM. Review your CD-ROM to see if it includes the Asset Tag Utility. If so, use the CD-ROM to run the utility as described in Section 2.
