You're about to head off on an important business trip and your laptop needs a charge. Your car doesn't have an AC plug, however, so you have no way to plug in the charger. To solve this dilemma, use can use a power inverter, which takes 12-volt DC power from the cigarette lighter and converts it to AC current. The installation of a power inverter can be done in a few minutes.

    Look at the label on the side of your AC laptop charger and determine the wattage required. Look at the model number, which may tell you the charger's wattage rating, such as that of the Apple MacBook, which is an 85-watt charger.

    Purchase a power inverter that is rated above the wattage rating of your AC laptop charger, up to 150 watts. Plug the inverter into the cigarette lighter power outlet.

    Plug the AC laptop charger into the outlet on the side of the power inverter. Turn on the car to activate the cigarette lighter outlet. Flip the "On" switch on the power inverter. Connect the charger to the laptop to determine whether it's working correctly.
