Homemade Prince Charming costume

Updated July 19, 2017

Prince Charming is a character who appears in many fairy tales, including "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty". He is usually the object of the heroine's affection, with the pair meeting and falling in love before living happily ever after. As the name suggests, Prince Charming is a member of a royal family so he tends to dress in fancy, regal clothing. The look may be expensive, but you can achieve it cheaply by making a few easy items and tailoring an old shirt and trousers.

Find an old white shirt and an old pair of trousers in your closet. Buy them from a fashion or second-hand shop if you do not have them.

Replace all the buttons on the shirt with gold buttons. Do this by cutting the buttons off and sewing gold ones in their place.

Draw a 30 cm (1 foot) long and 15 cm (6 inch) wide oval on the gold card stock. Cut it out. Cut it in half so you have two semi-ovals that are 15 cm by 15 cm (6 inches by 6 inches).

Cut a piece of gold fringing that is long enough to stretch round the curved side of one semi-oval. It does not need to go around the straight edge. Apply glue on the top 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) of the fringing and then stick this to the underside of the card around the edge of the curve of the oval. The rest of the fringing should hang down as if it is framing the underneath of the card stock with a fringed curtain. Repeat on the other semi-oval.

Glue the two semi-ovals to the two shoulders of the shirt. Place them so the straight edge is on the collar side of the shoulder and the curved fringing will fall over the edges of the shoulder down towards the arm.

Glue one end of the 1 m (40 inch) long gold rope under the gold semi-oval on the left shoulder. Glue the other end of the rope under the semi-oval on the right shoulder.

Cut a piece of 5 cm (2 inch) wide gold ribbon that is long enough to run vertically down the outer leg of the trousers from the top at the waist band to the bottom at the end of the leg. Sew this ribbon to the centre of the outer left leg of the trousers using the backstitch. Repeat to cut and sew a ribbon down the centre of the outer right leg.

Wear the altered trousers and shirt, then add smart shoes.

A partner or friend could dress up as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella or Snow White to match.
