Building a simple kneeling meditation bench is a good way to make your meditation time more enjoyable and effective. A meditation bench allows you to kneel in a traditional fashion without resting your weight on your feet. With better circulation and less pressure on your knees, it becomes easier to concentrate and to meditate for longer periods.
A classic meditation bench allows you to sit five to six inches off the floor at a slight forward angle. It encourages good posture and complete relaxation.

- 1 20-inch by 6-inch block of wood, 3/4-inch to 1 inch thick
- 2 8-inch by 6-inch blocks of wood, 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch thick
- 2 3-inch metal hinges with hardware
- Compass, ruler and protractor.

The simplest approach is to leave the seat rectangular. If you want a little more style and elegance, you can round the corners of your seat. Lay the wood flat. About 2 inches down the length of the wood from one corner, use the ruler to measure 2 inches in. Draw a line at 2 inches with the pencil. Then move about 2 inches along the width of the wood from the same corner, and measure 2 inches in again. Draw another line. The two lines should cross each other.
Set your compass to 2-1/4 inches. Place the compass point at the cross and draw an arc along the corner. Repeat the measurement and arc at the other three corners.
Use the jigsaw to cut carefully along the lines creating even, rounded corners.
The two small pieces of wood will become the legs. The simplest approach is to leave the legs at an even height, but your meditation bench will be more authentic and more comfortable if you make angled legs.
Lay one piece of wood flat. At one end, place the centre point at one corner with 0 degrees along the width of the wood. Measure a 15-degree angle. Carefully draw a line, following the angle from the corner to the far, long side of the wood. Do the same with the other piece.
Use the jigsaw to cut carefully along the line. Set the legs upright on their flat ends to make sure the angled ends of the legs match each other exactly, otherwise yourbench will wobble.
Sand each piece of wood thoroughly until all the surfaces are soft and smooth.
Blow away any excess wood dust. Stain each piece of wood according to the directions on the stain that you've chosen. With most stains, you brush the stain on and then wipe the excess away with a soft cloth.
Allow the stain to dry completely before the next step.
Use the hinges to attach the legs to the seat. The hinges will allow you to fold up your bench for easy portability and storage.
Measure 2 inches in from each end of the seat and draw a long pencil line. This is where you will affix the hinges.
Lay one leg flat. Lay the hinge along the angled end of the leg, so that the place where the hinge bends is even with the angle. Use your pencil to mark where the screw holes will go.
Remove the hinge and use a small drill bit to drill lead holes at each point. Take care not to drill all the way through the wood!
Once the lead holes are complete, place the hinge back on the leg and use the drill and screws to secure it in place. Repeat the process with the other leg. Take care that the angle will run in the same direction as the first leg when both are attached to the bench.
Place one leg and hinge along the line you marked on the seat in the previous step. Mark the screw holes with a pencil. Do the same for the other leg along the other line. Double-check the marks. You want them to be the same distance from each end of the seat. You also want them be the same distance from the front of the seat.
Use a small drill bit to drill lead holes, taking care not to drill all the way through the wood. Once the lead holes are complete, use the drill and screws to join the hinges and legs with the seat.
