How to Decorate a Soccer Cake
A 3-D soccer cake. (Spiegel/

Soccer players and soccer fans alike will appreciate an impressive-looking, three-dimensional soccer cake. The cake is actually very simple to make, and while this method can be used on a round cake, a dome-shaped cake will create a more dramatic visual effect. Create a dome cake by baking any cake recipe in a metal or oven-safe glass bowl rather than a standard cake pan.

Skill level:

Things you need

  1. 1

Remove the cake from the bowl and place it flat-side down on a tray or baking tray. Allow the cake to cool completely after baking before you attempt to frost it. Apply one coat of white frosting to the entire cake with a spatula.

  2. 2

Frost the cake with a second coat of white frosting. Try to make the frosting appear as smooth as possible to achieve the appearance of a soccer ball. If you are having difficulties smoothing the frosting, run the spatula under hot water for a minute and then dry it off before using it again. The hot spatula will melt the frosting slightly, smoothing it.

  3. 3

Draw a pentagon on a piece of paper. A pentagon is a five-sided shape, and these shapes cover the surface of a soccer ball. Make sure that all of the sides are equal, and then use scissors to cut out the shape. A pentagon cookie cutter can be used instead if you have one.

  4. 4

Add a few drops of black food colouring to fondant and knead the fondant until it becomes black. You may need to add more food colouring during the kneading. Roll the black fondant onto a lightly floured surface with a rolling pin.

  5. 5

Place the pentagon onto the fondant and cut around the pentagon with a knife. You will need to cut out six pentagons.

  6. 6

Press one of the fondant pentagons onto the centre of the cake. Press the fondant gently but firmly into the frosting. Take the chopstick and trace around the fondant to create an outline in the frosting. This will give the cake a more three-dimensional appearance.

  7. 7

Gently set a second fondant pentagon onto the cake so that one side lines up with one side of the first fondant pentagon. Do not press the fondant into the cake. Use the chopstick to create an outline around the pentagon and then carefully remove the fondant. You have now created the appearance of a white pentagon on the cake. Repeat this process to create a row of white pentagons across the centre of the cake.

  8. 8

Place the remaining fondant pentagons onto the cake. They should be placed below the row of white pentagons you created. Press the fondant into the cake while referring to the picture of the soccer cake if you need to.
