A space Marine costume is a great choice if you don't want to buy a costume or the materials to make one, though you might think of some great things you can buy to improve your outfit. It's easy to turn yourself into a space Marine with the things you already have around your house--as long as you're willing to spend some time thinking about all the possibilities, gathering your resources and doing a bit of artistic work.

  1. 1

Cover yourself from head to toe. To brave that harsh climate of space, space Marines generally need suits that protect their whole bodies. Although you don't really need to keep out the cold of space, covering your whole body will help create the illusion. A motorcycle helmet is ideal for your head, but other combinations of helmets, ski masks and goggles can work as well. Rain boots can have a nice metallic shin. You should also wear long trousers, long sleeves and gloves.

  2. 2

Add protective armour. Space Marines are often bulky, with thick protective layers to armour themselves against nature and their enemies. You can use elbow, knee and other padding you have from sports or fashion a chest plate out of scraps of cardboard and styrofoam.

  3. 3

Coordinate your colours to unify the visual affect and create the appearance that you are wearing a suit and uniform. You might be able to find a one-piece garment for your trousers and shirt, like coveralls or a hunting or snow suit, or find clothes of a matching colour. You might also be able to paint your armour and gloves the same colour as your boots or helmet or select items that go together. Make sure no piece of your outfit has a style that looks out of place.

  4. 4

Work with the materials you have. There are many different images of what astronauts, space marines, and other space explorers look like to base your costume on. If you don't have any protective gear, you can shift your focus to adding futuristic touches to the uniform of a Marine who works inside a ship. If you don't have any basic clothes that do any good, you might want to a build a full cybernetic outfit from cardboard.

  5. 5

Accessorise. Space Marines are defined by combat, so your weapon is a focal point of your costume, whether you fashion it out of scraps or use a toy gun. You can also accessorise with a radio, jet pack or utility belt, and you might want to adorn your outfit with a military insignia or with medals for your previous achievements.
