How to remove wuauclt exe

The wuauclt.exe process is part of the Windows Update process and checks the Microsoft website for any potential Windows software or hardware updates. It is generally listed in the Task Manager’s processes and is a legitimate process that poses no security threats to your computer. Wuauclt.exe can be shut off and removed without affecting system processes on your computer. If you prefer to manually scan for updates for your system, removing it won’t be a loss.

Press "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and choose "Start Task Manager." Click the "Processes" tab to show the currently running processes on your computer.

Select "wuauclt.exe" and choose "End Process" to stop this program from running. Close the Task Manager.

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Computer." Double-click the "Windows" directory and double-click the "System 32" directory.

Locate the "wuauclt.exe" file. Right-click the file and select "Delete" from the context menu. Empty the recycle bin to complete the removal process.


If the wuauclt.exe is in any folder other than the System32 folder, there is a possibility of viruses on your computer. You should perform a full virus system scan to remove potential threats.
