Halloween is a time for both scary and funny costumes, candy corn, caramel apples, jack o' lanterns, and Halloween parties. While technology has changed the past-times of today's youths, one of the games our pioneer forefathers played is still popular today--the Apple Bobbing Game. While simple and very low-tech, the game still elicits joy and laughter from players of all ages.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- Large galvanised aluminium tub
- Low table
Place a clean, large galvanised aluminium tub on a low table, such as an old coffee table. Fill the tub with water within 8-inches of the top ring.
Place eight or nine apples in the tub of water.
Choose a player to start the game. Explain that she must keep her hands behind her back while she bends over and tries to grab an apple with her teeth. Have the player approach the tub to begin.
Explain that the player gets three chances to grab an apple (or you may set a time limit, such as 10 seconds, instead).
The first player, after grabbing an apple from the tub with her teeth or giving up her turn, should choose the next player to try.
Tips and warnings
- For increased difficulty, remove the stems from all the apples.
- Have old cloth towels or paper towels handy for players to dry their faces.
- If you are playing the game indoors, place a shower curtain under the table to prevent water from spilling onto the floor.
