Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz” is a popular Halloween costume. While many shops and websites offer Dorothy costumes in various styles (sexy Dorothy, cute Dorothy or Dorothy for children), many costumes do not include the most important aspect of the costume--the ruby slippers. Make your own version of the ruby slippers and click your heels three times for a complete Dorothy Halloween costume.

  1. 1

Find the perfect shoes for a Dorothy costume. The shoes that you choose will be permanently turned into ruby slippers, so your favourite Mary Janes may not be a good option. Choose some old shoes that you don’t wear very often, or find some inexpensive ones at a retail store, thrift store or discount shop. The style of shoe that you choose depends on your approach at being Dorothy. For example, if you’re taking the sexy approach to Dorothy, look for 6-inch stiletto Mary Jane's or other heels.

  2. 2

Paint both shoes red. The type of paint to use depends on the fabric content of the shoes. Read directions on the fabric paint before using it.

  3. 3

Cover one small section of the shoe in glue. Do this in sections so that the glue doesn’t dry before you’ve had a chance to add the glitter.

  4. 4

Cover the glue immediately with red glitter. Shake off any excess glitter. Continue gluing sections of the shoe and adding glitter. When you are finished with the whole shoe, set the shoe aside to dry. Now do the same with the other shoe.

  5. 5

Hot glue red sequins on after the shoes have dried and the glitter is firmly attached. Especially add sequins where there are gaps in the glitter.
