How to give your boyfriend space
Giving space isn't always a bad thing. (urban guy image by Dmitri MIkitenko from

Maybe your boyfriend has asked for some space or maybe you can just tell that he needs it. Each partner in a relationship needs to have time to himself or herself at times. By giving and getting space, you'll appreciate the time you have with your significant other when the two of you get together again. Sometimes absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Ask your boyfriend if he needs space. Some guys won't come right out and tell you that they need some time alone. You may feel something is wrong by the way he's acting toward you. Asking for answers is perfectly all right, especially if you refrain from appearing too needy. Simply offer some space to figure things out.

  2. 2

Listen to him if he says he needs space. You don't have to get overly emotional. Space doesn't necessarily mean that he wants to break up. He just may be stressed.

  3. 3

Respect his wishes. If he asks for a couple of days, then give him a couple of days. If he asks for a couple of weeks, then give him that time. Take care of yourself as well.

  4. 4

Ask what space means if he doesn't make it clear. Find out if he means no phone calls or just not seeing each other every day. Maybe you can still see him on the weekends. Everybody has a different level of needing space.

  5. 5

Keep yourself busy while you two are apart. Instead of moping around, spend time with your friends and family. Take part in activities that you enjoy.

Tips and warnings

  • Don't just sit around feeling sorry for yourself if your boyfriend asks for space. This is a good time to do things with your friends and enjoy some time alone.
  • Don't take your boyfriend asking for space the wrong way. Time apart is a good thing for couples at times.
  • Don't call him numerous times a day if you two are spending time apart. That makes you look needy.
