How to make string cheese

Cheese is one of America's favourite foods. String cheese, is an all time favourite snack. It is delicious yet still fun to eat. Kids and adults alike love string cheese. Have you ever thought about actually making string cheese yourself. Of course you have bought it in the store, but did you know that it is entirely possible to make it in your own kitchen? Although the process is not simple, you can make string cheese in seven steps.

Things you need

  • 1 teaspoon mahleb, middle eastern spice
  • 0.454kg mozzarella cheese curd
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • Cling film

    Melt the cheese in a saucepan with all the seasonings. Make sure that the pan is set on low heat. Melt thoroughly.

    Remove the cheese from the heat and drain all extra water.

    Pick up the cheese with your hands once it is cool enough. Make a hole in the middle like a doughnut and stretch with both hands to make a loop.

    Fold the cheese over and stretch again. Repeat this several times.

    Stretch one final time and twist the ends in opposite directions. Loop the two ends together.

    Place cheese in a dry area to set and dry.

  7. 7

    Surround cheese with cling film and place in refrigerator.

Tips and warnings

  • Mahleb is a Middle Eastern ingredient that can usually only be found in speciality food stores.
  • Make sure to drain all water or the cheese will not stretch correctly.
