You have probably seen silverfish in your house -- small, strange looking insects that dart away when you uncover their hiding places. Living in places like cabinets, cupboards and other dark locations, silverfish can damage books and eat your dried goods. Luckily, you can repel them with some simple household spices.

Silverfish do not like the scent of cloves, according to ABC Tasmania. Although you can use clove oil in your cabinets, whole cloves are more effective because they retain their scent for longer.

Time Frame

To be most effective, keep your cloves fresh in your cabinet. Over time, the smell will wear off and lose its effect on the silverfish. Be warned: objects around the spices may also start to smell like cloves.

Scents from citrus peel and bay leaves can also be effective for keeping away the silverfish.
