Handmade Tree Decorations
Handmade decorations, like hand-tied bows, add cheer to a Christmas tree. (Christmas trees image by MAXFX from Fotolia.com)

Creating handsome, homemade Christmas tree decorations provides an opportunity for families to spend an afternoon making holiday crafts together. Simple materials can be used to make interesting holiday keepsakes. In addition to decorating your own tree, consider giving the handmade ornaments as gifts.

Many simple craft materials such as yarn, pipe cleaners, and beads can be used to create fun, beautiful craft projects.

Twist together red and white yarn to create handmade candy-canes for the tree. Twist sparkly pipe cleaners into stars and other shapes. Decorate with glittered and coloured beads to add some sparkle to the Christmas tree. Paint clothespins to resemble reindeers and paint a tongue depressor to resemble a snowboard.

Kid-Friendly Ideas

Help children create a new Christmas decoration each year. By the time kids grow up and move out of the house, they will have a collection of homemade ornaments for their own tree. Use a marker to write a child's name and the date on their project.

Outdoor ornaments

Many people concentrate on making decorations for their indoor Christmas trees but neglect to decorate outdoors. String popcorn and cranberries on fishing line to create garlands for the birds to dine upon.

Gift giving

Wrap homemade ornaments in simple brown, butcher's paper. Adorn with holiday ribbons to create simple, handmade Christmas gifts.
