For those living in small apartments or condos with limited space, or who enjoy camping activities, compact washing machines and dryers can fit into small areas and allow the at-home convenience of doing laundry. Some are constructed to be moved into place when needed and then rolled back into a closet for storage until needed again.

Features of Compact Washers and Dryers

In addition to the space-saving features of compact washers and dryers, some of the compact washers can do a load of laundry in just a few minutes, using far less electricity, water and detergent than regular-sized machines. Some also use environmentally friendly cleansers, which many of the "eco-conscious" may consider a benefit.

Advantages of Compact Washers & Dryers

The main advantage of compact washers and dryers is, of course, their space-saving feature. A compact washing machine also uses far less water than conventional washing machines, in some cases up to 90 per cent less. Their small size allows them to be employed in motor homes, recreational vehicles and campers, or placed in the boot of a car for transporting. For those who want to go "Green" or already are, there are washing machines that require no electricity at all.

There are compact washers and dryers that operate on electricity and those that use gas; gas units have a higher purchase price but are usually more economical to operate over time. There is a compact washing machine designed specifically for areas that do not have ready access to water; named "Swirl" and shaped like a ball, it is filled with laundry, rolled to a water source and filled with water. The process of rolling the Swirl cleans clothes as they tumble inside the sphere. There is even a compact washer that can be mounted on a wall like a painting, or underneath the basin in the bathroom.

How Compact Washers and Dryers Impact Costs

Conventional washers and dryers are quite a bit more expensive to operate than the smaller compact models. Most of the energy used by regular-sized machines--up to 90 per cent--is for heating the water. Using compact washers and dryers translates to a cost saving in this area because they use far less water. Manufacturers of washing machines do not publish specifications on energy and water use for their products, such as temperatures used for hot and warm settings. Using compact washers and dryers allows greater control over the amount of energy and water used to do laundry.

The benefits of using compact washers and dryers range across age, occupation and demographics. RV users can utilise these small units to do laundry while camped or moving down the highway. Students in dorms can do laundry while cramming for finals instead of making trips to and from the laundromat. People who live in areas far from available water can use a compact washer to clean clothes while playing or exercising.
