Without regular cleaning, wood floors can become cluttered with dirt, dust and other debris, losing their natural, warm appeal. Fortunately, there are vacuum cleaners that can help. Those who think vacuums as strictly carpet-cleaning machines will be pleased to know several models are well suited for cleaning wood surfaces.
According to the Vacuum Wizard website, the Miele S4212 Neptune Canister Vacuum Cleaner is one of the best vacuum models on the market for cleaning wood floors. It features an electrostatic, multilayered filter consisting of interwoven polymer fibres, a powerful 1200-watt motor for superior suction and a six-speed motor control for varying the amount of power you need.
If you find "heavy" items like gravel on the wood floor, you can operate at full-power and while for lighter cleaning, like sucking up dust, you can use a lower setting. The Neptune also features wheels that swivel a full 360 degrees, making it easy to control.
At around £52 (as of 2010), the Eureka 3670 Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum is one of the most affordable vacuums for cleaning wood floors, as well as one of the best. As Galt Tech notes, the vacuum is excellent at sucking dirt and dust off of hardwood floors, while still powerful enough to clean heavy wool rugs. Standard features are a 9-amp motor, attachment tools for dusting and reaching crevices and an automatic shutdown mechanism to prevent overheating.
Dirt Devil Breeze
Like the Eureka 3670, the Dirt Devil Breeze is an inexpensive wood floor vacuum option, costing around £55, as of 2010. The Breeze is a bagless vacuum, which means you will never have to purchase new bags. According to Vacuum Wizard, the Breeze has a transparent dirt-collection cup instead, which you empty out and put back after each use. The vacuum also features a 12-amp motor, a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filtration system for removing allergens, a 360 degree swivelling front wheel and attachments for reaching crevices.
As the Vacuum Cleaner Advisor website notes, the Panasonic MC-CG885 OptiFlow features a 12-amp motor, and has four adjustable height settings for transitioning from one type of floor surface to another. The cleaning head of the vacuum has a convenient foot switch that allows a shift from the carpet brushes down or "on" (for cleaning rugs and carpets) to having them up or "off" for cleaning wood floors. Like the Dirt Devil Breeze, the OptiFlow utilises a HEPA filtration system, has an attachment for reaching crevices and can pivot at 360 degrees.
