The golf club shaft has traditionally been made with five different flexes to suit players' swing speeds. Recently, Nike and Callaway have introduced clubs with the so-called "uniflex" shaft, which is designed to appeal to a broader range of golfers. The uniflex shaft is a hybrid shaft that offers a flex somewhere between the two most popular flexes--stiff and regular. The uniflex shaft would appeal to a higher handicap golfer who is unsure what flex best suits his needs.

Types of Flex Golf Irons

Golf club shafts come in five different levels of flex--extra stiff (X), stiff (S), regular (R), senior (A) and ladies (L). The kind of shaft flex you should use is dependent on your swing speed. Golfers with slower swing speeds would tend toward a more flexible shaft.

About Shaft Flex

If you consistently drive 300 yards or more, an extra stiff shaft is appropriate. If you consistently drive 250 to 300 yards, a stiff shaft is appropriate. If you consistently drive 225 to 250 yards, a regular shaft is appropriate. If you consistently drive 200 to 225 yards, a senior shaft is appropriate. If you consistently drive less than 200 yards, a ladies shaft is appropriate.

Who It Suits

The uniflex shaft would be marketed to golfers who drive between 225 to 300 yards. According to True Temper, who manufactures the uniflex golf club shaft, it is designed to "appeal to the largest range of golfers." This flex is soft, like a regular shaft but is supposed to be as stable as a stiff shaft and helps to increase the trajectory of the ball.

Advantages of Uniflex Golf Irons

The uniflex shaft is soft, like a regular shaft but is supposed to be as stable as a stiff shaft and helps to increase the trajectory of the ball. Many golfers refer to it as a "stiff regular."

Finding Uniflex Iron Sets

The uniflex shaft is steel and is manufactured by True Temper for Nike and Callaway. The uniflex shaft is available on the Nike NDS and Callaway Fusion clubs.
