The Moonlight Saunter is a dance done in 4/4 time that is ranked as being one of the favourite dances along with the fox-trot. It is also a favourite in national championship dancing.

Section One: The Man

Hold the woman's right hand with your left, and place your right hand in her shoulder blade. Stand in front of the woman and a little to her right. Step forward with your left foot, step forward with your left foot, and step forward to your right. As you step on your right foot, pivot on the ball of your foot so that now you're facing toward the wall. Step forward with your left foot and around the woman on her left. Place your foot a little to the right and pivot on the ball of your right foot so that you're diagonally facing the centre. Step forward with your right foot to the right side of the woman. Point your left foot to the left and pivot on the ball of your left foot until you've returned to your original position, the woman in front of you and a little to your left.

  • Hold the woman's right hand with your left, and place your right hand in her shoulder blade.
  • Step forward with your left foot and around the woman on her left.

Section One: The Woman

Stand in front of the man and a little to his left. Hold his left hand in your right, and place your right hand on his upper left arm. Step back with your right foot, step back with your left foot, step back with your right foot and step back with your left. As you step back with your left foot, turn on the ball of your left foot and turn a little to the right. As you step back with your right foot, the man will move to your right. Place your left foot so it's pointed to the left and pivot on the ball of your left foot so that your left foot's back is diagonally pointing toward the centre. Step back with your left foot as the man moves to your side. Place your right foot so it's pointing to the side and turn on the ball of your right foot so that you've returned to your original position with the man before you and a little to his left.

  • Stand in front of the man and a little to his left.
  • Place your right foot so it's pointing to the side and turn on the ball of your right foot so that you've returned to your original position with the man before you and a little to his left.

Section Two: The Man

Step forward with your left foot, step forward with your right foot. Do not lift your left foot from the ground but rock your body forward, then without lifting your right foot from the ground, rock your body to the back. Step to the side on your left foot and bring your right foot over to your left. Step back with your left foot, step to the side with your right foot, then bring your left foot to your right. Step forward with your right. Repeat the last four steps and end by turning until you face a little right of the diagonal.

  • Step forward with your left foot, step forward with your right foot.
  • Step back with your left foot, step to the side with your right foot, then bring your left foot to your right.

Section Two: The Woman

Step back with your right foot, and step back with your left. Without lifting your right foot rock your weight back to your right foot and shift your weight forward on your left foot without lifting your left foot. Step to the side with your right foot and move your left foot to your right. Step to the side with your left foot and bring your right foot to your left. Step back with your left foot. Repeat the last four steps and end by turning until you face a little left of the diagonal.

  • Step back with your right foot, and step back with your left.
  • Step to the side with your left foot and bring your right foot to your left.
